I've been where you are

In the early years of my teaching, I was using dance traditions to guide how I taught - having taken countless classes, with different teachers, I thought I knew how to teach dance. Right? Maybe not!

I didn't know with 100% certainty the why of what I was doing. I couldn't for example explain to students the science of stretching. Or what muscles make up the true core. Supporting performance pressures and confidence issues was definitely an unknown.

How I wish there d been easy to understand guides that focused on this.

Well, here it is!  The Essentials is everything I’ve learned through deep, evidence-based training, tertiary and certification qualifications with 17 years real-world teaching experience, and a fierce commitment to student wellbeing — all packaged into one course for dance educators like you.

No fluff. No overwhelm. Just clear, up-to-date insight you can use immediately.

When we know more  — your students get better outcomes.

And one final thing. Let’s start making basic anatomy a normal part of dance conversation — not a specialist subject. Let’s give the next generation something better to pass on

THE ESSENTIALS

INTRODUCING

This is where you get the latest research in physical and emotional strategies to support your dancers. It's a refresh, not a rewrite to your current teaching tools.

you'll know

WEEK 1 – Breath Basics
Because how they breathe is how they move.

  • Nervous system know-how + real-world breath tools that bring more calm, core stability, and flexibility.

WEEK 2 – Power + Stability
It’s not about harder. It’s about smarter — knowing your body #injuryprevention.

  • Learn why common exercises can hijack stability, and how to build real strength from the feet to the upper spine, inside and out — with anatomy that finally makes sense. Did someone say #longevity?

WEEK 3 – The Real Core
Spoiler: it’s not about the six-pack.

  • Target the muscles that actually support effortless performance, and switch off compensation patterns — all without crunches or confusion.

WEEK 4 – Flexibility with Alignment Insight
Less forcing. More feeling.

  • Get the lowdown on fascia, the stretch reflex, to name a few, and how to teach flexibility with proprioception, purpose, and props that honour every body.

WEEK 5 – Wellbeing-Focused Conditioning
Because pain isn’t a prerequisite for progress.

  • Rewire your warm-ups and rethink your goals with evidence-based tools from polyvagal theory, mindset work, and trauma-aware strategies. Give your students the tools to best navigate competition and comparison

WEEK 6 – Recap + Integration
Teaching tools you’ll actually use.

  • Come full circle. Reflect, refine, and gather extra resources to keep your teaching research-backed, powerfully student-focused with a human first approach.
